The Directors of the Scholarship Foundation wish to thank our generous donors of prizes who made the Scholarship Foundation’s 2011 Fundraising Raffle possible, and we thank all who participated by purchasing tickets. The funds raised helped to provide the ten Foundation scholarship grants awarded in June 2011 and will contribute to the awards to be presented in 2012.

Thanks too, to those who sent sponsored awards for 2012. To date, we have two Legacy Awards in honor of Thomas W. Mason and Major General Maurice Kendall, as well as six donor-sponsored awards to be presented in 2012: “The Adam Kradyna Award in Honor and Memory of James Kradyna,” “The 3rd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Award in Honor and Memory of Staff Sergeant Jerome C. Owens”; “The Award in Honor and Memory of Ralph E. ‘Rick’ Richenbacher”; “The Award in Honor and Memory of our 3rd Infantry Division Soldiers,” the “Joceland Papelard Award for Excellence,” and “The James and Joan Strawn Award for Excellence.” Certainly, we hope to have more sponsored awards for the 2012 program.

We also thank those prize recipients who sent donations to help defray the cost of shipping prizes to recipients not in attendance at the drawing. Very few recipients of prizes were present so we shipped over 50 prizes during the week following the reunion.

Last, but certainly not least, we thank Chaplain Jerry Daddato and his spouse, Kathy Daddato, president of Outpost #2, for their capable assistance in drawing and assigning the winning tickets to the prizes. We also thank Joe Ball for the accurate record he preserved and posted following the drawing.

Plans are underway for the Society of the 3rd Infantry Division Scholarship Foundation’s 2012 Grant Awards Program. The deadline is May 1, 2012, and it is not too early to prompt your eligible offspring to begin preparing their submissions. In addition to our Legacy Awards in honor of Thomas W. Mason and Major General Maurice Kendall, we already have five donor-sponsored awards to be presented in 2012: “The Adam Kradyna Award in Honor and Memory of James Kradyna,” “The 3rd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Award in Honor and Memory of Staff Sergeant Jerome C. Owens,” the “Award in Honor and Memory of the 3rd Infantry Division’s Life-saving Evacuation of Refugees through the Port of Hungnam, North Korea, December 1950; the “Award in Honor and Memory of SFC Ralph E. “Rick” Rickenbacher, WWII and the Korean War,” and an award to be named by donor Trans America Underwriters, Inc. We hope to receive more sponsored awards as these are a wonderful way to remember and honor our loved ones and the special people who touched our lives.

Those eligible to compete for scholarship grants in the amount of $1000 must be the biological or adopted offspring (children/grand children) of Soldiers who served or are serving in the 3rd Infantry Division, Soldiers (past and present) of the Division, and widows of Soldiers killed in action or who died of their wounds. In all cases, applicants must be registered at a university, college, or technical/vocational school at the time of application.

The August Watch on the Rhine included photos and profiles of our ten, 2011 Scholarship Recipients, and we announced their names and the names of their sponsors at the Society Reunion in New Orleans. We have heard from several 2011 donors who were very pleased with the applicants chosen to receive their awards. It was a landmark year for us, as we were able to award more scholarship grants than ever before. Still, there were those we could not serve. It was very difficult for our judges to find the top ten applicants from the large field of submissions received. We commend Earl E. Killen, Jerry B. Kraft, Thomas R. Maines, and Dr. Marco Montoya, and we thank them for their hard work in selecting our 2011 recipients.

Now, for the problems we encountered with the 2011 applications: We publish the application and instructions, and applicants should follow the instructions carefully. All items listed in the application and instructions are needed, and if they are not included, the application is rejected. One example of omissions was the failure to submit a current transcript because the current one was “not yet available.” Applicants should send their last official transcript (high school or college) and the “unofficial” transcript showing their current progress or the courses in which they are enrolled. If there is a problem with obtaining an “unofficial” transcript, please have your applicant contact Lynn Ball. She will explain how to obtain the necessary document. Another applicant “declined” to state annual income. Again, this is a requirement listed on the instruction form. Our judges use ALL information provided to identify the recipients. No one item is more important than any other item. Collectively, they help the judges make good decisions. The only item that judges do not receive in their evaluation packages is the applicant’s photograph. Photographs are used only when we publish the recipients’ photos and profiles in the Watch on the Rhine and on our websites. Nevertheless, a photograph is also a required item.

We look forward to receiving 2012 applications from your offspring. Please share with them the above suggestions for success, both with respect to the Foundation’s awards and to any other organization’s awards they are seeking. We will provide more tips for success in later issues.

We thank the donors listed below. It is because of our donors’ kind support that we are able to provide assistance to some of our 3rd I.D. scholars. We are very proud of our recipients. We truly have a lot of very intelligent offspring in our 3rd Infantry Division family.

Scholarship raffle prizes

Certainly, the most important message from the Scholarship Foundation is “Now is the time to encourage your college-age offspring to submit their scholarship grant applications for the 2011 competition.” The deadline is May 1st. Currently, our two most important projects, in the order of current activity, are the Scholarship Fundraising Raffle and the Scholarship Grant Program. The raffle drawing date is September 10, 2011, and the deadline for Scholarship Grant Application entries is May 1, 2011.

Fundraising Raffle

We are sure that some folks questioned our reasoning when our raffle tickets and purchase requests arrived during the holidays. There was no “reasoning” behind the result. There was, however, a “comedy of errors” that led to the result. First, we had to wait until all dates for the 2011 Society Reunion were firm and contracts were signed so that we could include the drawing date on the tickets. Second, we had to wait for a run-slot with the printer—that was complicated by the Thanksgiving weekend when the printer closed shop to provide vacation time for his employees. Then, there was another (unforeseen) delay because we specified that our tickets be printed on yellow paper. It seems that so long as the printer had still more order for white paper tickets, he held our order. Then, of course, delivery was held up by the United States Postal Service, which is permitted to hold all bulk mail for 48 hours at every post office through which it passes. Since the raffle is our only fundraising activity for 2011, we had no choice but to practice patience.

In spite of the poor timing, we are encouraged by the early response. Early response will determine how many scholarship grants we can award in 2011, so we want to thank everyone who has already sent ticket purchases and urge others to purchase them soon. We didn’t mention in our letter enclosed in our mailing that we are willing to generate return address labels and affix them to tickets for those who do not want to fill out their tickets or for those who have difficulty writing. We are grateful to everyone who purchased more than one book of tickets as well. We made address labels and affixed them to the tickets ordered and returned the stubs to the purchaser. Our mailing list for the raffle was quite limited so everyone who purchases tickets has a good chance of winning something. The prizes we currently have are all very nice. It is not too late to donate prizes to the raffle. If you have something you want to donate as a prize, please send it to the Foundation at 2010 Worcester Lane, Garland TX 75040. Tax-certification letters are sent to all donors of raffle prizes and monetary contributions.

2011 Scholarship Grant Program

Currently, in addition to our Foundation Grants, we have the following grants to present in 2011: two Legacy Awards, the “Thomas W. Mason Old China Hand Award,” the “General Maurice Kendall Award,” and the following six sponsored awards: the “Adam Kradyna Memorial Award Honoring James Kradyna, the “James and Joan Strawn Award,” the “ Terrence A. Smith Award in Honor of Captain Michael J. MacKinnon,” the “Dr. and Mrs. Bae Suk Lee Award in Honor and Memory of the Hungnam Evacuation, Dec. 1950,” and the “Thomas R. Maines Award.” Legacy Awards are presented into perpetuity when a donor contributes $10,000 to the Foundation. Sponsored Awards are presented during the fiscal year when donors contribute $1,000.00 or more to the Foundation. In both cases, the Foundation names the grant using the donor’s name unless otherwise specified by the donor. All funds not needed for Scholarship Grants are invested to produce interest for future grants. We are very grateful to all donors contributing any amount of money to the Foundation. They should all be very proud of the fact that they are making this program possible. Our volunteer staff is quite proud of the fact that our office expense is held to less than 1%. Money spent on office supplies is primarily used for paper, ink, envelopes, and stamps.

Scholarship Grant Applications: Now is the time to put our young folks to work on their applications for 2011 Scholarship Grants. These must be received by the Foundation no later than May 1st. It is important that applicants begin working on their entries very soon as building their exhibits and gathering letters of reference takes time—especially during the school term when everyone, including letter writers, is very busy. The application and instructions are on our Society website at www.3rdiv.org and on our Foundation website at http://www.3idscholarshipfoundation.org. Both the application and instructions are also available from Chairman Lynn Ball. Contact information is on page 2 of this issue of the Watch. Also, please contact Lynn Ball with any questions you or your young applicant may have; phone, 972-495-1704.

Sponsor’s Letter: Each candidate must have a sponsor who is a member of the Society and who has past or present service with the 3rd Infantry Division. The sponsor must be a direct relative (parent, grandparent, great grandparent) of the candidate. Associate Members can serve as sponsors if they have a parent or grandparent who served with the 3rd Infantry Division. Soldiers who have served with the 3rd and are applying for grants may serve as their own sponsors. The Sponsor’s Letter is relatively simple to write: just include information about your service with the 3rd (when and where you served) and an explanation of how your candidate is related to you. Candidates must be biological or adopted offspring of the sponsor who is serving or has served with the 3rd Infantry Division. Sponsors should also include a statement suggesting aspects of the candidate’s excellence.

Tips for Success: Candidates would be wise to ensure that those selected to write Letters of Recommendation will, in fact, write favorable letters. Grades alone do not provide a complete picture of the candidate. The Letters of Recommendation enable our judges to gain an understanding of each candidate. Other exhibits showing community service and work history (if any), as well as a sound essay, are also helpful—both to the candidate and to our judges. (Be sure to proofread carefully.) In choosing a photograph to include with the application, the candidate should realize that the photo is going be published in the Watch on the Rhine and on our websites. Since the photos are used only for publication, they should be chosen carefully to present a favorable public image. The photos are not for our judges. In fact our judges do not see the photographs until they are published in the Watch and on our website, which occurs after the competition is completed and recipients of grants have been notified.

Again, we look forward to receiving both scholarship grant applications from your offspring and ticket purchases in support of the 2011 Scholarship Grant Program. We send special thanks for the donations we have received. We have recognized those who sent gifts since the last publication of the Watch, and we have listed their gifts on our website. Thanks very much for your help in providing more scholarship grants in 2011.

Currently, the Directors of the Society of the 3rd Infantry Division Scholarship Foundation are completing work on planning the Foundation’s raffle to ensure funds for our 2011 scholarship grant recipients. Raffle tickets will be sent to our members soon, and the raffle will culminate with the drawing for prizes on Saturday, September 10, at the 2011 Society Reunion in New Orleans, Louisiana. Jerry and Kathy Daddato will assist with the drawing. Winners do not have to be present at the reunion; the Foundation will ship prizes to all winners not in attendance. Since the photo of prizes appeared in the October Watch, we have received several more prizes, including an M1 non-firing replica: 1.1 scale, zinc movable action, hardwood stock. Not only does it have moving parts, but also it weighs as much as the M1 rifle. Both the M1 replica and the .36 caliber Model 1851 Navy Revolver (Uberti), donated by Wayne Conley, are beautiful works of art. When Wayne donated the revolver, he mentioned that it has never been fired since factory testing. We urge those who have prizes to donate to send them to the Foundation. We are still accepting donations.

We are very encouraged by the support of members who have sent donations. Recently, James and Joan Strawn sent a Platinum donation and then applied for Matching Gifts from Jim’s former employer, Chevron. Chevron responded with their check for $1000. Our donors should request Matching Gifts from their former employers. All donors have to do is contact their former employers and request that their gifts be matched. The employer will then send a form to the Foundation to verify the donation. We complete the form and return it. In every case, the gift has been matched. Prudential’s Matching Gifts program nearly doubled the gift donated by Jim Tiezzi two years ago. Matching Gifts programs have always matched or exceeded gifts donated. We have one donor who owns his own business which matches his gift.

Each year, we have more applicants to our program than the year before. All of our planning and work on the raffle and other fundraising projects is being done to ensure we can award grants to all deserving applicants. It is not too early for applicants to begin preparing their grant submission packages. The deadline for applications to the Foundation is May 1st. The application and instructions are available on the Society website at www.3rdiv.org and on the Foundation website at http://www.3idscholarshipfoundation.org. Applicants can also contact Lynn Ball, at 972-495-1704, for information and the application.

Each applicant must have a sponsor who served with the 3rd Infantry Division and is a member of the Society. The sponsor must submit a letter on behalf of his/her applicant that should include brief information about his/her service in the 3rd Infantry Division as well as brief information describing the qualities of the applicant being sponsored. The sponsor’s letter can be sent to the Foundation, separately, or it can be included in the applicant’s submission package. Associate Members who have a parent or grandparent who served with the 3rd Infantry Division are eligible to sponsor biological or adopted children or grandchildren. (Check with Lynn Ball, early, regarding the sponsorship letter declaring deceased members of the 3rd, as these require some research. This also applies to widows of 3rd I.D. Soldiers killed in action or who died of their wounds.) Current or past Soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division, applying for grants, may sponsor themselves; all others must have a sponsor who has served with the 3rd.

Applicants are urged to provide those writing letters of recommendation with a typed list of their accomplishments. Our experience is that some letter writers do not stay focused or they try to guess at accomplishments. This has resulted in erroneous information that confuses our judges. Also, applicants should ensure that those writing letters of recommendation know them well enough to write a favorable letter. In the past, we have received letters that were not supportive. Now is the time to put our young folks to work preparing their submission packages. If we thought that the outrageous fees at the universities have hit the ceiling, we were wrong. We are receiving news from several quarters about increased fees again this year. Since funding has been cut to universities and colleges, they are passing on their losses to their students or they are cutting services. At the college where I teach, we can no longer provide pass-outs to our students and students must now bring their own paper to the college if they wish to print their assignments on campus. Further, we are told that we will soon have to purchase parking passes. This has long been the practice at most universities, but until now, many colleges have not required such purchases by students, professors, and staff. All of these visible and hidden expenses are another reason why our young folks should apply for all scholarship grants available to them. Encourage them to start preparing for May 1st very early. Semester-end is always too busy to work on application grants and to obtain letters of recommendation. Our directors who will serve as judges this year are Earl E. Killen, Jerry B. Kraft, Thomas R. Maines, and Dr. Marco Montoya. Lynn Ball votes only when there is a tie. Chief Financial Officer Joe Ball is a member of our Board of Directors; however, he is not a voting member. Our Directors all look forward to receiving our applicants’ submissions for 2011 grants.

Plans are underway for our 2011 Scholarship Foundation Scholarship Grant Awards Program. The deadline for entries is May 1, 2011. It is not too early for candidates to begin planning their entries. When seeking letters of recommendation, candidates should ask only those whom they know well and whom they believe can write a favorable recommendation. When seeking such letters, it is best to give the letter writer a typed explanation of what is needed. Letters of recommendation should be addressed to the Scholarship Foundation, and candidates should include a list of accomplishments. With the list in front of the writer, is it less likely that misinformation will be included. Last year, a letter writer mistakenly said that the candidate, a female, had received many awards from the Boy Scouts. This sort of error on the part of a letter writer who is not focused on the task can cause disappointment—if not for the candidate, certainly for the judges who must research to learn the truth. Every aspect of the application is important and should be planned carefully. A list of the requirements is displayed on the Society’s 3rd ID web page at http://www.3rdiv.org and on the Scholarship Foundation’s website at http://www.3idscholarshipfoundation.org. At the Society website: click on Scholarship Application on the left. On the Scholarship Foundation website: click on Application. Today, with tuition costs so high, it is wise to seek scholarship grant funds wherever available.

Some donors have already sponsored some scholarship grants for 2011. Added to our Legacy Awards, “The Thomas W. Mason Old China Hand Award” and “The General Maurice Kendall Award,” are the “Adam Kradyna Memorial Award Honoring James Kradyna,” and “The James and Joan Strawn Award.” To support our 2011 Program, the Scholarship Foundation is conducting a fundraising raffle. We will send tickets to our members this fall, and the drawing will be at the 2011 Society Reunion in New Orleans. Winners do not have to be present to win. The Foundation will ship prizes to recipients who are not in attendance.

Currently, we have over 50 prizes and several more have been pledged. The prizes we have on hand are pictured here. We started with one weapon, the never-been-fired .36 caliber Model 1851 Navy Revolver (Uberti), donated by Wayne Conley; since then prizes have arrived almost daily. Among them is our second weapon, an M1 non-firing replica: 1.1 scale, zinc movable action, hardwood stock.

Not pictured above are a queen-size quilt with the 3rd I.D. Patch, a set of six mugs with the Patch, and two American flags flown on missions in Iraq in honor of the 3rd Infantry Division—complete with documentation.

Those wishing to support our 2011 Scholarship Grant Program can send donations to Scholarship Foundation, 2010 Worcester Lane, Garland TX 75040. We thank our generous donors, listed below, for their marvelous support. We send Tax-certification letters and updates on our program to each donor.

Legacy Donor Thomas W. Mason has assigned a Gold Star bequest to the Scholarship Foundation. We are very grateful for his kind gift, but we miss our dear friend. Tom passed away on September 4, 2009, just nine days before his 98th birthday. We first met Tom five years ago when he called to say he wanted to make a Legacy donation to the Foundation. Our investment of his original gift and his recent bequest ensures scholarship grants annually. One of those grants will always be in his name. Tom must always be remembered for his superior intelligence and his tender heart. He really cared about our young people and wanted to help them with their educations. Over the years, he has helped eleven of our scholars with their college tuition and his help will continue even though he is no longer with us. His is a wonderful gift.

Born September 13, 1911, Tom began work before the age of 10 as a jeweler’s assistant, cleaning watches and delivering items to customers. During the 1920s, he worked as a field hand and lumberman. In 1931, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 9th Field Artillery in Ft. Lewis, Washington. As it was the height of the Great Depression, Tom said he joined less for patriotism than for “the guarantee of three squares per day.” Tom wanted to serve in China; however, a volunteer was not accepted unless the soldier had served a full three-year enlistment, received an Honorable Discharge, re-enlisted, and waited for a vacancy. After being accepted for China duty, Tom left Fort McDowell on Angel Island on 9/1/34, with stopovers in Hawaii and Manila, and arrived in Longkou, China, on 9/27/34. Assigned to the 15th Regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division, stationed at Tientsin, Tom joined the Service Company in the Transportation Platoon. This was a glorified term that meant he took care of the horses and mules. Tom didn’t like horses and hated mules, a perfect union of man and beast, thanks to the U.S. Army. At that time, a Private in the Army earned $28.75 per month, but Tom earned an extra $2.00 per month as a teamster, and he could buy a bottle of beer at the P.X. for nine cents.
In all, Tom said his days with the “Old China Hands” were some of the best of his military career. With official military duties completed by noon each day, the afternoons and evenings were filled with athletics. He and others often questioned why they were there, and what was the purpose of their mission? In later years he concluded that they were the line of communication between Peking and the sea.
In the mid-1930s, Tom returned to the States to serve with the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Missoula, Montana, and then with the 4th Coastal Artillery in the Panama Canal Zone. During WWII, he served with the Western Defense Command in San Francisco and with the 18th Coastal Artillery in the harbor defense of Columbia. In 1942, he received his warrant as a Warrant Officer. The same year, he and his wife, Frances, were the first couple married at the new Post Chapel at Fort Stevens, Harbor Defenses of Columbia. After WWII, he served with the Army of Occupation of Japan from 1948-’50; then he was with the 14th Infantry Regiment at Fort Carson, Colorado.
Tom rejoined the 3rd Infantry Division just after it arrived in Korea, in 1950, and he played an important role in the evacuation of Hungnam, for which he was awarded the Bronze Star. He finished his career at Fort Benning and retired in 1954 with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4, after 23 years of service.
In retirement, he was a stump farmer and raised livestock while also serving as a mail carrier in the Forest Grove, Oregon, area. Tom outlived all of his family except one nephew. However, he leaves behind many young admirers who have been touched through his membership in the 15th Infantry Division Association, the Society of the 3rd Infantry Division, and those supported by his endowed scholarship grants for Soldiers’ family members through the Society of the 3rd Infantry Division Scholarship Foundation. Until the end, Tom was a bright and knowledgeable conversationalist. He often said his family was the 3rd Infantry Division. We miss him greatly.

In other News:

Now that 2010 scholarship grants have been awarded to eight excellent scholars—all  offspring of Veterans and Soldiers of the Division—the Society of the 3rd Infantry Division Scholarship Foundation, Inc. has begun work on its 2011 Scholarship Grant Program. At the present time, we hope to award at least six scholarship grants in the amount of at least $1,000.00 each. We hope finances will allow us to expand our current plan.                                                             —Submitted by Lynn Ball on behalf of our Directors

Posted 8/4/2010

The deadline for submissions for 2010 Scholarship Grants was May 1st.  Currently our Foundation Directors are evaluating the submissions and selecting the recipients for this years awards.  Serving as judges this year are Earl E. Killen, Julius B. "Jerry" Kraft, Thomas R. Maines, and Dr. Marco Montoya. Chairman Lynn Ball votes only when a tie occurs.

We have pre-screened all submissions (which are numerous again this year) for eligibility, and in doing so, we have noticed the excellence of our 3rd Infantry Division young people. Our Society should be very proud of our young generation which these applicants represent. Once grant recipients are identified, they will be notified and grants in the amount of $1000 each will be paid to their financial accounts at the colleges, universities, and technical schools they designated.

Our judges consider every aspect of each application. The chair’s major responsibility in this area is screening for eligibility and managing the entries which are sent to our judges for their evaluation. One thing we have noticed on some applications every year involves the letters of recommendation sent on behalf of the applicants. Applicants should ensure that every person writing a letter of recommendation is truly supportive. Applicants should request letters of recommendation only from people whom they know well and who know them well. There should be a firm and successful academic relationship between teacher and student when requesting a letter of recommendation. Recommendations from people outside academia should be considered more carefully than most applicants realize. If unsure, applicants should ask the potential writer whether or not he/she can write a favorable letter of recommendation.

We are very excited about this year’s field of applicants, and the August Watch on the Rhine will include the photographs and profiles of our 2010 grant recipients. Again, this year, we have more applicants than our budget will serve. Perhaps donations will enable us to extend our budget this year.

We will conduct a raffle in 2011, to raise funds, and we will announce the drawing date and send out raffle tickets soon after this year’s reunion. The drawing will be at the 2011 reunion. Currently, we are gathering prizes for this event. The April issue of the Watch described the prizes we had on hand at that time, including the wonderful .36 caliber Model 1851 Navy Revolver (Uberti), donated by Wayne Conley, of Savannah, Georgia. We hope for more donated firearms, and the Foundation will try to find a good weapon at some of the gun shows between now and September. Prizes mentioned in April include a queen-size quilt with the 3rd ID Patch donated by Kathy Daddato, A Kid from Pittsburgh donated by author Marion Rosen, Bill Maulden’s Army donated by Tom Maines, Faces of War II donated by Dr. Bae Suk Lee and Norman L. Strickbine, a complete set of state quarters donated by Bob Wakefield, and photo albums with the 3rd ID patch. More recent donations include William J. Kunz’s book, Third and Ten, reviewed in this issue; John J. Toffy IV’s book, Jack Toffey’s War, reviewed in the April issue, and Howard Swacina’s World War II Memories, to be reviewed in August. We will publish a photo of our current prizes in the August issue. We are grateful for all of these donations, and we hope for more prizes so please consider helping with this effort. Just send your prize or donation to the Foundation at 2010 Worcester Lane, Garland TX 75040. We will include your name and a description of your prize or recognition of your donation in the August issue of the Watch and tax-certification letter are sent for all donations of prizes and monetary gifts.

Following are the names of those who have donated to the Foundation since our last issue of the Watch. Thank you for your generosity. Helping to educate our younger generation is very worthy work. Our Society could not accomplish this without your support.

The Society of the 3rd Infantry Division Scholarship Foundation is currently planning its 2010 Scholarship Grant Program. The deadline for 2010 entries is May 1st. Applications are available on the Society website at www.3rdiv.org, on the Foundation’s website at http://www.3idscholarshipfoundation.org or by contacting Lynn Ball, Chairman, at 972-495-1704. Entries must be sent to the Foundation at 2010 Worcester Lane, Garland TX 75040. The Foundation will present at least six awards in the amount of $1,000 each. Our Directors, Earl E. Killen, Jerry B. Kraft, Thomas R. Maines, and Dr. Marco Montoya, will judge all entries in May and early June. Scholarship Grants will be paid, in mid-June, to recipients’ financial accounts at the colleges, universities or technical schools specified by the recipients. Those eligible to compete include Soldiers of the Division (past and present) and their Children, as well as the unmarried spouses and children of 3rd Infantry Division Soldiers killed in action or who died of their wounds while serving in combat with the 3rd Infantry Division.

In parallel with this effort is our program to raise funds for this year’s awards. Last year, our budget was unable to serve all of our deserving applicants so we are conducting a mail-request program to raise additional funds, as well as a raffle, this year. In addition to the Foundation’s planned awards, we will present the following five awards funded through our Legacy Program and through individual contributions.

  • “The Thomas W. Mason Old China Hand Award”

  • “The Major General Maurice W. Kendall Award”

  • “The Terrence A. Smith Memorial Award Honoring Capt. Raymond D. Hill II”

  • “The Adam Kradyna Memorial Award Honoring James Kradyna”

  •  “The James and Joan Strawn Memorial Honoring Members of Golden Gate OP #54”

We are very proud to present these 2010 awards. Even though Thomas W. Mason passed away in September 2009, we will continue to honor him annually, through our Legacy Program so his name and memory of his pride in his service with the 3rd Infantry Division will live on into perpetuity. Like Thomas Mason, Major General Kendall will be honored annually under our Legacy Program, and we hope, in the near future, to have a photograph and profile approved by General to publish in The Watch on the Rhine and to post on our website. The Terrence A. Smith award honors Capt. Raymond D. Hill II, who was killed in action in Baghdad, Iraq, on October 29, 2005. It is humbling to remember our fallen heroes like Thomas Mason, Capt. Hill, and James Kradyna, an avid supporter of higher education in the field of geology, in such a special and lasting way. Our brave Soldiers deserve all the recognition we can provide. We are delighted that we can honor Major General Kendall during his lifetime, because he has done so much through both his military service to our country and through his efforts to provide scholarships to our young people through his independent program. We are also proud to present the James and Joan Strawn Memorial Award Honoring Members of Golden Gate Outpost #54, many of whom served proudly with the 3rd Infantry Division. We hope to have more such honors included in this year’s Scholarship Grant Program and in the future.

Those interested in donating prizes for our next raffle should send them to the Foundation at the address above. We will announce the drawing date and send out tickets early this summer. Outpost #60 Member Wayne Conley, of Savannah, Georgia, has donated a Model 1851 Navy Revolver (Uberti), .36 caliber. It is new and still in its original box. Other prizes now in hand include a queen-size quilt with the 3rd ID Patch donated by Kathy Daddato, A Kid from Pittsburgh donated by author Marion Rosen, Bill Maulden’s Army donated by Tom Maines, Faces of War II donated by Dr. Bae Suk Lee and Norman L. Strickbine, a complete set of state quarters donated by Bob Wakefield, and photo albums with the 3rd ID patch donated by Lynn Ball. This is a good start. In matching the success of our last raffle, we hope to have at least 40 prizes. Please send anything you think our members would like. The Foundation will send you a tax-certification letter to help defray Income Tax obligations.

Those contributing monetary gifts to our program should check to learn whether or not their present or past employers have Matching Gifts Programs. Yes, many companies honor both retired employees’ and current employees’ efforts to obtain matching gifts. Participating companies usually contribute more than the donor’s original contribution—often doubling and even tripling the amount donated. These matching gifts are credited to the original donor as well as to the company participating. Just ask your company to send you a Matching Gifts Application, fill in your name and address at the top of the form, and send it to the Foundation at 2010 Worcester Lane, Garland TX 75040. The Foundation will complete the form and keep you informed regarding progress of your application. Funds contributed through Matching Gifts will be reported in the Watch and on the Foundation’s website.

Those donating to the Foundation since January are listed below. We are very grateful for your contributions, and our directors thank our donors.

Call for Applications for Scholarship Grants

The Scholarship Foundation is currently accepting applications from candidates seeking 2010 scholarship grants in the amount of $1000 or more. Four or more scholarship grants will be awarded in 2010. All applications must reach the Foundation by the deadline date, May 1, 2010. Our Directors will determine awards in May, and scholarship/grants will be paid in June to the recipients’ accounts at the institutions of higher learning specified on their applications. Candidates can obtain the official application and instructions needed to complete their submissions at the Society website, www.3rdiv.org, or at the Foundation website, http://www.3idscholarshipfoundation.org, or by contacting Chairman Lynn Ball at 2010 Worcester Lane, Garland TX 75040, or at 972-495-1704. Applicants’ sponsors must be Regular Members or Direct Descendant Associate Members of the Society of the 3rd Infantry Division. Soldiers of the Division may serve as their own sponsors. Please contact Lynn Ball with any questions you might have.

Those eligible to compete for scholarship grants include all Soldiers who served or are now serving with the 3rd Infantry Division and their biological or adopted offspring, as well as the unmarried spouses of Soldiers killed in action or who died of their wounds while serving in combat with the 3rd Infantry Division. Our program has been expanded to include graduate students. Remember, the deadline for entry is May 1, 2010.

Grants already Planned: In addition to the Scholarship Foundations’ direct awards, we already have two awards honoring individuals: “The Thomas W. Mason Old China Hand Legacy Award” and the “Terrence A. Smith Memorial Award Honoring Cpt. Raymond D. Hill, II.” The Thomas W. Mason Award is presented annually under our Legacy Program. An essay entitled “Rock of the Marne at the Tigris and Euphrates,” by our 2009 Legacy Award recipient, appears in this issue. Sadly, Thomas W. Mason passed away in September 2009, but his name and memory of his pride in his service with the 3rd Infantry Division will live on into perpetuity. Terrence A. Smith’s award honors Cpt. Raymond D. Hill, II, who was killed in action in Baghdad, Iraq, on October 29, 2009. It is wonderful to remember our fallen heroes like Cpt. Hill in such a special and lasting way. We hope to have more such honors included in this year’s Scholarship Grant Program. Our brave Soldiers deserve all the recognition we can humbly provide.
Good News: In the December Watch, we announced the availability of several copies of Faces of War II: Red Dragon, the Second Round and requested that those wanting a copy of the book send the Foundation a suggested donation of $28.00. Since then, Dr. Bae Suk Lee, who was instrumental in obtaining the books for us, contacted the editor, Norman L. Strickbine, and explained that we might need more books. Mr. Strickbine said he would supply as many books as we need so please send us your orders. Faces of War II: Red Dragon, the Second Round is a hardback chronicle containing 468 pages featuring 190 profiles of the men and women who served during the Korean War. Along with these vignettes are hundreds of photographs, many published for the first time. Each profile begins with a photo of the individual featured, and his/her full name, serial number, nickname, MOS, birth date, hometown, and a list of medals and awards received. The profile continues with the individual’s background and experiences while serving in Korea. On each facing page are captioned photographs depicting events discussed in the profile. Included in the book are several action maps, memorials, and poems, as well as definitions of all abbreviations listed in the book; these enhance the summary of the actions during the Korean War. The remaining pages are filled with captioned photographs. It is a wonderful book to own. To order, make your check for $28.00 payable to the Foundation and send it to 2010 Worcester Lane Garland TX 75040. Enclosed with your book, you will receive a tax-certification letter for the amount donated.

Upcoming Programs: Our directors are currently in the process of developing our 2010 fundraising and Scholarship Grant programs. Last year we had many more applicants than our budget could serve. We hope, this year, to serve all deserving applicants. To do this, we need your help.

We have received many supportive comments about our 2009 raffle, and some donors have begun to send prizes for our next raffle. While no date has yet been set for another raffle, we have received Wayne Conley’s promise of a weapon, and we are looking into obtaining other weapons for a future raffle. Kathy Daddato has delivered a handmade, queen-size quilt featuring The Patch, and Paul Schewene sent two, author-signed copies of Newport: The Sin City Years, which includes information about the 7th Infantry Regiment stationed at Newport, Kentucky, in 1808. We appreciate this support and will let everyone know our decision regarding a future raffle as soon as possible. Currently, we are working on our fundraising programs to support our 2010 awards. The Scholarship Foundation is chartered by the I.R.S. as a Not-For-Profit Public Corporation, and our Directors are all volunteers who receive no payment for their services. This means that all contributions support the Foundation’s work.
Those wishing to assist in our efforts to provide scholarship grants to our Soldiers and Children of the Division should send their gifts to the Foundation at 2010 Worcester Lane, Garland TX 75040. Donations to the Foundation are tax-exempt and Letters of Tax Exemption Certification are issued by return mail to all donors. (There is a delay in word reaching us when donations to the Scholarship Foundation are sent through the Society. However, as soon as we receive notification of a donor’s gift, we issue a Tax Certification Letter.) We thank the recent contributors listed below. These contributions were received between 11/10/09 and 1/9/10.

Scholarship Grants Awarded!!!

The Directors of the Society of the 3rd Infantry Division Scholarship Foundation, Inc. have completed evaluation of the many 2009 applications and have awarded eight grants to very deserving recipients. The names of our 2009 recipients were announced at the Society’s Awards Banquet on September 19, 2009, in Springfield, Missouri, and their photographs and profiles are included in this issue These are also posted on our Society website at http://www.3rdiv.org and on our Foundation website at http://www.3idscholarshipfoundation.org. Judges for this year’s competition were Earl E. Killen, Jerry B. Kraft, Thomas R. Maines, and Dr. Marco Montoya. In parallel with Foundation awards, they presented the following Legacy and sponsored awards.
  • The Legacy Award
    • Thomas W. Mason, Old China Hand”
  • The Sponsored Awards
    • Jerry Kraft and Gracie Potts Award “Honoring General William G. Webster and LTC James Silva”
    • Thomas R. Maines Awards (2)
      • “In Memory of SFC Ralph E. Rickenbacher”
      • “Honoring Forward Scout, PFC Wayne T. Alderson”
    • LTC Terrence A. Smith Award “In Memory of Sgt. Shaker T. Guy”
    • James and Joan Strawn Award “Honoring The 10th Engineers”
The Foundation thanks the sponsors who provided these awards. Grants awarded to our 2009 recipients have been paid to the university and college student accounts designated.
This year, the Foundation received a great many excellent applications, and judges had a difficult time determining the top eight entries. In fact, they required several additional days to complete their task. It is our hope that proceeds from our raffle and donations from supporters will enable us to provide more grants in 2010. We are hopeful that several 2009 applicants will reapply in 2010.
Those wishing to donate to this effort should send contributions to the Foundation at 2010 Worcester Lane, Garland TX 75040. Early contributions determine the number of grants to be awarded in 2010. We thank all of our donors for their help in 2009. Below is a list of those who donated to the Foundation since the last Watch publication.

2009 Scholarship Raffle is underway!!  See Link above

New Constitution and ByLaws page (updated 4-30) available for download: Here

The Directors of the Society of the 3rd Infantry Scholarship Foundation, Inc. are currently evaluating applications submitted for scholarship grants in 2009. Awards of $1000 each will be paid to successful recipients’ accounts at their institutions of higher learning in June. Because the Foundation received a very large number of excellent entries from both Soldiers and Children of the Division, our judges requested an additional few days to make their final decisions.

This year, both Legacy and Sponsored awards were presented in parallel with Foundation awards. Brief profiles of the honorees and our successful candidates will appear on the Society’s website at www.3rdiv.org and on the Foundation’s website at http://www.3idscholarshipfoundation.org in August, and in the Watch on The Rhine following the Society’s 90th Reunion. The names and brief profiles of those receiving the following awards will be announced at the Society’s 90th Reunion in Springfield, Missouri, in September.

  • The Legacy Award
    • “Thomas W. Mason, Old China Hand.”
  • The Sponsored Awards
    • Jerry Kraft and Gracie Potts Award honoring “General William Webster and LTC James Silva”
    • Thomas R. Maines Awards
      • In memory of “SFC Ralph E. Rickenbacher”
      • Honoring “Sgt. Wayne T. Alderson”
    • LTC Terrence A. Smith Award in memory of “Sgt. Shaker T. Guy”
    • James and Joan Strawn Award honoring “The 10th Engineers”

As you know, all members of the Scholarship Foundation Board of Directors are volunteers. They receive no salary or expenses for their work on behalf of our Soldiers and Children of the Division. All funds donated to support the work of the Foundation come from our generous donors. We have no other source of income so our donors are very important to the success of the Foundation, and our Directors express their gratitude to all who have contributed to this important effort.

We also urge our donors to seek “Matching Funds” from their present or previous employers. We maintain a list of over 1,000 companies who offer matching gifts when their employees donate to “Not-For-Profit Public Charities” like our Scholarship Foundation. All of these companies match funds donated and, many times, they double and even triple the donor’s gift. Donors receive recognition for their company’s donation as well as their own. If you wish to take advantage of the “Matching Gifts Program” offered by your past or present employer, let us know the name of your company when you send a donation to the Foundation. Our staff will complete the necessary research, obtain the “Matching Gifts” application, complete it, and send it to you for your signature. This is a very easy way to provide additional donations to the Foundation.

Our raffle to raise funds for 2009 is going well. Tickets are still available from the Foundation, and the drawing will take place at the Society’s 90th Reunion in Springfield, Missouri, on September 19, 2009. Our generous prize donors have provided over forty prizes for the event. You do not have to be present to win. The Foundation will ship prizes to winners who are unable to attend the reunion. Send your requests for tickets and payment to the Foundation at the address below. Our staff will fill out your tickets, enter them in the drawing, and send your ticket stubs to you.

Those wishing to contribute to the scholarship program can send donations to Scholarship Foundation, 2010 Worcester Lane, Garland, Texas, 75040. Our donors are truly investing in the future of our country. It is our hope that our scholarship program to benefit Children and Soldiers of the Division will attract even more members to our fine Society. Thank you for supporting our efforts and the higher education goals of our soldiers and our young people. Following is our list of donors who have contributed since the last Watch was published.

The Society of the 3rd Infantry Division Scholarship Foundation, Inc. announces its “Legacy Program,” through which donors receive annual recognition, and its plans for 2009 scholarship grant awards. Eligible for scholarship grants are Soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division and their offspring. The deadline for scholarship grant applications to the Foundation is May 1, 2009. “Application and Instruction” forms are available on the Society website at http://www.3rdiv.org and on the Foundation website at http://3idscholarshipfoundation.org, as well as from the Foundation at the address below.

Through the Foundation’s “Legacy Program,” donors contributing $10,000 or more to the Scholarship Foundation shall be recognized, into perpetuity, when scholarship grants are awarded in their names, annually. The Legacy Program also honors individuals with a photo and approved profile displayed permanently on the Scholarship Foundation’s website. Our Foundation Directors are grateful to General Maurice W. Kendall for sharing fundraising strategies with us. Through discussions with him, we were able to finalize our Legacy Program in September. Our website is now displaying our first Legacy Profile honoring Thomas W. Mason.

In 2009 the Scholarship Foundation will present seven scholarship grants including the “Thomas W. Mason, Old China Hand” Legacy award and the following sponsored awards: “Whitney P. Mullen Award Honoring All Soldiers of The 15th Infantry Regiment of The 3rd Infantry Division”; the “LTC Terrence A. Smith Award in Memory of Sgt. Shaker T. Guy,” who was killed in action in Iraq on October 29, 2005; the “Jerry Kraft and Gracie Potts Award Honoring General William Webster and LTC James Silva,” and the “Thomas R. Maines Award in Memory of SFC Ralph E. Rickenbacher.”

At the Society’s 2008 Reunion held in Columbus, Georgia, Scholarship Foundation Directors presented the plaque illustrated here, honoring SFC Rickenbacher, to General Anthony A. “Tony” Cucolo and the 3rd Infantry Division with the Foundation’s request that the plaque be displayed permanently at Ft. Stewart Military Museum. General Cucolo not only agreed to have the plaque entrusted to the Museum but also arranged to have a 3rd I.D. photographer produce this photograph, which he presented to the Foundation. We are very grateful for General Cucolo’s generosity and for the generosity of the benefactor who donated the plaque.

SFC Ralph E. Rickenbacher was seriously wounded in Korea on April 24/25, 1951, while rescuing a fellow soldier when his battalion was overrun by a vastly superior Chinese force. Upon his death, SFC Rickenbacher was interred at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. Information about the Scholarship Foundation is available from Lynn Ball at 2010 Worcester Lane, Garland, Texas, 75040, phone: 972-495-1704, ldball1@msn.com or at the websites listed above. Donations in the form of checks should be addressed to “Scholarship Foundation,” and mailed to the Foundation at the same address. The Foundation sends tax-exempt certification letters for every donation, and all donors are recognized in the Watch on The Rhine and on the websites above. The Scholarship Foundation is very grateful for any and all donations; no gift is too small. All donations received are applied to the scholarship grants awarded annually and to the investment growth of the Foundation, which guarantees scholarship grants into perpetuity. All members of the Scholarship Foundation Board of Directors are volunteers who receive neither salaries nor expenses, and a generous benefactor donates recognition gifts such as the heirloom plaque shown above. For more information, contact Lynn Ball or visit the websites listed in this article. Following is a list of those who donated to the Foundation in October.

Scholarship Foundation Announces 2009 Raffle

The Society of the 3rd Infantry Division Scholarship Foundation announces its 2009 raffle to raise funds in support of scholarship grants to Children and Soldiers of the Division. Tickets are on sale now. The drawing will be on Saturday, September 19, 2009, at the Springfield/Branson reunion; however, you do not have to be present to win. The Foundation will ship prizes to any winners who are not in attendance at the reunion.

Tickets are $2.00 each (3 for $5.00 or $20.00 for a book of 12). Please request tickets from the Foundation at 2010 Worcester Lane, Garland TX 75040. If you send funds with your request for tickets, Foundation Chairman Lynn Ball will enter your tickets in the drawing and send your ticket stubs by return mail. If you prefer to fill out your own tickets, send requests to the address above or phone 972-495-1704, and the Foundation will send your requested tickets to you. All prizes are donated: those donating prizes for the raffle will receive recognition in future articles and on the Society website, www.3rdiv.org, and the Foundation website, www.3idscholarshipfoundation.org.
